What are relationship skills?

Whether it's a relationship with a friend, a family member, a partner, or a co-worker, relationships are hard and navigating through these connections can be both challenging and emotionally draining. Often, we step into relationships without a clear idea of what to expect in return and without insight into their potential impact on our well-being. We yearn for acceptance, respect, love, support, connection, joy and fun, but reality may not always align with these aspirations. What then?

Imagine having the ability to carefully select the relationships you enter, fully aware of what each dynamic offers. Strong relationship skills are essential for fostering healthy and fulfilling connections with others. Effective communication, empathy, active listening, boundary setting and and conflict resolution are key components to maintaining positive relationships. These skills require practice and mindfulness, but investing time and effort into improving them can lead to more satisfying and meaningful interactions with friends, family, and loved ones.

Do I need to learn some relationship skills?

You might if any of the following ring true:

  • You find yourself in relationships where you often act as if everything is fine, even though deep down you are aware that your own needs are being neglected or dismissed;

  • There are times when you feel like others take advantage of you, overlook your feelings or fail to show you the same respect and consideration that you offer them;

  • You spend endless hours mulling over the right words to express yourself and dream about a healthier, happier relationship, only to remain silent out of fear of potential awkwardness or jeopardizing the friendship, leading to frustration and anger with yourself for not speaking up;

  • You are scared to say goodbye to the friends you have because the thought of forming new connections feels daunting and unfamiliar;

  • And/or you simply wish your relationships were different, easier, better.

What does relationship skills therapy look like?

We will look into your past and present relationships and identify patterns. We will explore your upbringing, reflect on societal and cultural norms and expectations, establish personal values aligned with your current self and master the art of setting firm boundaries. We will figure out who you are and how you want to show up in your relationships and we will figure out the obstacles standing in your way.

What will I gain from relationship skills therapy?

  • You will gain the power to not only define how you show up in your relationships, but also how others will show up for you;

  • You will be able identify and express your thoughts, emotions, wants and needs clearly and assertively;

  • You will be able to stand up for yourself when your wants and need do not get met;

  • You will be able to set healthy boundaries and hold to them;

  • You will be able to understand and validate others' feelings;

  • You will be able to truly listen to what others have to say (vs. listening simply to respond);

  • You will be able to resolve disagreements respectfully;

  • And you will be able to decide whether you stay or leave the relationship, knowing that you did everything you could to make it better.
