Therapy for Big Life Changes (in Austin and Online Across TX & CA)
Big life changes happen to all of us, whether we’re prepared for them or not and can be a source of both excitement and anxiety. Whether it's a new job, a move to a different city, the end of a significant relationship, or the birth of a baby, to name just a few, these transitions can bring about a mix of emotions and challenges.
Adjusting to a new routine, establishing connections in unfamiliar environments, and navigating the unknown can feel overwhelming. Recognizing and accepting the range of emotions that come with change is an essential step towards adaptation and growth. Embracing change as an opportunity for self-discovery and personal development can lead to resilience and newfound strengths as you navigate through life's inevitable shifts and transformations.
Whether your big life change is:
Your relationship (long-term commitment, engagement, marriage, break-up, exploration, separation, divorce);
Growing your family (having babies, adopting, fostering, becoming a pet parent);
Your education (college, graduate school, post school life);
A big purchase (a home, a second home, a car, a boat);
Your job (changing jobs, losing your job, being unemployed, taking time off to figure things out);
A big move (whatever that may mean to you);
And/or managing aging family/ the death of a loved one;
These are not events you need to navigate alone.
What does therapy for big life changes look like?
I’ve experienced most of the transitions listed above, sometimes multiple times, and would like to accompany you on your new journey. Over time I’ve figured out how to see transitions as new opportunities rather than overwhelming periods of life loaded with anxiety, indecision and dread. By reframing these transitions as opportunities for growth rather than sources of stress, we can work together to validate your emotions, shape positive perspectives, set realistic expectations, and cultivate resilience to help you chart a clear path forward. Remember, you are not alone in this.
How will therapy for big life changes help me feel better?
You will be able to see through the fog and chart a clear path forward for yourself;
You will be able to slow down and tackle things one at a time vs. getting overwhelmed and avoiding or shutting down;
You will be able to be present in the moment vs. worrying about all the things;
You will find strength in your existing abilities and resilience to build news skills;
You will start to see the “bright sides” in the not so sunny moments;
You will re-engage with yourself in ways that are kind, compassionate and graceful;
And you will not fear the change that is happening, but instead be able to embrace it with calm confidence.
How long will it take to feel better?
While there is no definite answer, I’ve been told that my clients have started to feel better and more in control after our first session together. Feeling more confident and having a clearer path forward will take some time, but you can expect to feel better within the first 1-3 sessions.
